Brilliant Bookshops: Walter Henry’s, Bideford

Bideford is an historic harbour town with literary connections to Henry Williamson and Charles Kingsley. It has a lovely museum and the historic Pannier Market as well as plenty of independent shops. One of these is Walter Henry’s Bookshop.

Found on the High Street, this lovely shop is a very welcoming space, bursting with books. It’s importance to the local community was made obvious by a constant stream of customers popping in whilst I was in the shop- and if I lived nearer, I would spend a considerable amount of time here!

Helpful, friendly staff were on hand to offer assistance, but were equally happy to let customers browse at leisure. When I asked about local history books- specifically about the ladies known as the ‘Bideford Witches’, Temperance Lloyd, Susanna Edwards, and Mary Trembles- they were very helpful. An excellent bookshop- definitely one to go back to!
