Broadstairs: Oliver Postgate’s house

Born on the 12th April 1925, Oliver Postgate, with his colleague, Peter Firmin, was responsible for some of the loveliest children’s programmes ever made. Originally broadcast by the BBC from the 1950s to the 1980s, series like The Clangers, Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog and Bagpuss delighted viewers- and still do!

Oliver and Peter set up their business, ‘Smallfilms’ near Canterbury where they used stop motion filming with Postgate writing the scripts and doing many of the voices whilst Peter created the models and did the artwork.

Oliver died in a nursing home in Broadstairs on the 8th December 2008 near to his home which is now marked by a plaque and a mosaic, made by local artist Martin Cheek, showing two of the Clangers, Tiny and Major. I read somewhere that Tiny Clanger is meant to be saying, ‘Who's Oliver Postgate?’ and Major Clanger replying, ‘You fool, he made us!’, but I have no idea whether this is true!

The house is on Chandos Square and is now available as a holiday let.
