Reviews

There are so many incredible books available at the moment that it is impossible to read them all, no matter how hard I try! Here are my thoughts about some of the books I have read and how I think they could be used in school as well as Q and A sessions with authors and illustrators.

Myths of China

I have long been fascinated by Chinese history, its myths legends and culture- so much so that it was where we went for our honeymoon! Part of DK’s ‘Meet the Gods’ series, ‘Myths of China’ offers a fantastic introduction to this complex mythology, making the stories accessible and enjoyable for younger readers.

Following the same format as the other books in the series, the stories are gathered into different sections, in this case Beginnings, Magical Creatures, Journeys and Adventures, Love and Friendship and About the Myths. In each section, pages of additional information about key figures and events are scattered between the myths, deepening the reader’s understanding and adding much to their enjoyment of the book.

The book is beautifully illustrated throughout with colourful pictures both framing the stories and drawing attention to key figures. Focus pages on different gods and goddesses not only have the illustrator’s image, but also additional information about them and the role they play.

A note from the author at the end of the book makes the nature of these tales clear and admits to having used some creative licence in their re-telling, making an excellent point to start discussions with children about the similarities and differences between versions of the stories. Comparing and contrasting these myths with those of other cultures also enriches and deepens children’s understanding beyond the limits of the curriculum.

An absorbing and entertaining read!

Celtic Myths

‘Celtic Myths’ is the latest in a series of books from DK celebrating these ancient stories. Beautifully presented, full of colourful illustrations, this book offers a wealth of tales from the Celtic people of Britain, Ireland and Brittany.

The tales are organised into five sections: Heroes, Warriors and Rulers; Love and Loyalty; Magic and Mystery; Poetry and Places; and About the Myths. The collection contains an excellent balance of better and less well-known stories, making this a wonderful book to offer those new to Celtic myths.

Each story has been carefully retold, true to the original (although there are, of course, many different versions of the same story!) , yet in a way which is accessible and absorbing for children. A pronunciation guide and glossary at the end of the book support understanding and there are pages scattered throughout which provide a focus on different characters from the stories, deepening the reader’s knowledge and making links between myths.

The ‘About the Myths’ section is full of additional details with themed pages about, amongst other things, mythical places, heroes and families. Each section is gorgeously illustrated, sure to catch interest and spark imagination as, whether they are being introduced to these magical stories for the first time or returning to them in a new collection, readers enjoy this selection of Celtic Myths.

Marvellous Messages

Rose, her sign language interpreter, Dev, and Halo, one of her cats, are whisked off on a time-travel adventure by Perky Pigeon. On their journey, they find out about the development of, and varied methods of, communication as well as some of the deaf people who have made a real difference to the world.

Inspired by her personal experiences, Rose Ayling-Ellis has created a very engaging and informative book, a much needed recognition that communication is far from just speaking and listening. Interwoven into a time-travel adventure are many true stories about the ways in which these methods have developed, ‘Messaging Milestones’ timelines and biographies of ‘Rose’s Superstars’.

The book is an essential addition to any bookshelf, but really is a must-have for any school wishing to enrich their students’ learning, to value the contributions of Deaf people and add an excellent, inclusive text to their libraries. So many fascinating facts are included which could add colour and interest across the curriculum, ‘Rose’s Superstars’ could be used to form the basis of an assembly and the book’s narrative non-fiction format means it could also be used as a class story.

From the earliest documented use of sign language at a wedding in Leicestershire, puppy school in Wales, Hawaiian dance gestures, animal body language… there is so much to learn and enjoy about the amazing story of communication.

About Time

Beautifully presented and illustrated, ‘About Time: A Children’s Guide to the History and Science of Time’ is an utterly fascinating and engrossing read. Written by Rebecca Struthers, one of a very few watchmakers in the UK who make timepieces from scratch, and Alom Shaha, a teacher with a passion for science, it helps readers understand how clocks work and the various ways which humans have tried to measure time across the ages.

A clear contents and index both help the reader to locate specific information, but this is one of those factual books which, although a joy to browse through, is easily read from cover to cover. Starting with an explanation of what time is, the book moves on to how time is divided, exploring developments over time and calendars around the world.

Looking at methods of telling time without a clock, the book offers instructions for making a sundial, a water clock and a sand timer, each carefully explained, to encourage children to engage with the subject further. Diagrams are used to clarify and explain the workings of clocks and watches, sure to tempt readers to deconstruct one and explore for themselves!

Information about past makers and contemporary artisans offers a fascinating look at the developments by designers, engineers and inventors from across the world and there is even some practical information about becoming a watchmaker. This is the first book I have seen devoted to horology, full of inspiration and information, and it is sure to pique interest and open up a new area of interest to anyone who reads it. There is also much here which will support and enrich the curriculum, making it a very useful text for teachers to have to hand as well.

Rose Signs Good Morning!

It’s a lovely day and Rose sets about her usual morning routine, accompanied by her kitten, Casper. At each stage, she teaches Casper the new sign, allowing readers to join in and learn as well.

Bright and engaging, ‘Rose Signs Good Morning!’ is such a lovely book. Bold, colourful illustrations on each page show Rose as she gets ready in the morning- eating breakfast, brushing teeth, getting dressed- accompanied by an illustration showing how to sign that action using British Sign Language. A mirror on the final page is included, helping readers to see themselves and practise signing. The book offers a very accessible and enjoyable way of learning some frequently used signs, which can be easily expanded by the other books in the series.

In the signing queue for Rose at Hay Festival last week, I was able to ask some people who use signing every day what they thought of the book and how it was presented. Everyone felt that the signs were clearly presented and easy to follow, which led to discussions about the importance of books like this one, which raise the profile of sign language and encourage people to learn it.

Whether looking to introduce children to BSL, choosing an engaging story to enjoy or making sure children see themselves or those they know reflected in their reading, ‘Rose Signs Good Morning!’ and the other books in this series make an excellent addition to any bookshelf.

I Flew Around the World

At just 19, Zara Rutherford set off to fly solo around the world, becoming the youngest female pilot to do so. ‘I Flew Around the World’ is her account of this incredible journey, the places she visited, things she saw and people she met.

The book is a fascinating read, starting with the meticulous planning which led to turning her dream into reality. Extremely engaging, the content is presented in a variety of ways, including diary entries, sections of information, fact boxes and labelled diagrams. Colourful illustrations make the book attractive, but there are also photos of Zara, her cats and her experiences which engage the reader directly with her travels.

Children can follow the route of her inspirational journey on the map provided and learn how her plane works before sharing her adventures, gaining a personal view of the places she visited, as she faced the challenges posed by typhoons, earthquakes, wildfires on her way. Amongst these experiences, she shares some of the ‘speciality’ dishes she tried- like moose spaghetti- and her delight at meeting up with her parents in Mexico.

The book would make an excellent addition to school libraries, but would also make an excellent guided reading text, offering plenty to discuss and many cross-curricular links as well as being extremely inspirational, showing that determination and courage can help you achieve your dreams. Zara is also a shining role model for any young girls, particularly those keen to pursue STEM subjects- she is now studying electrical engineering at university. However, I challenge anyone not to be inspired by her story!

NNFN2024: An Anthology of Exquisite Birds

Once again, I must apologise for the lack of photos. Despite having contacted Squarespace and followed their ‘advice’, the site is still not working correctly.

For day 20 of National Non-Fiction November, I am sharing ‘An Anthology of Exquisite Birds’, a very beautiful book which I wish I could hare pictures of- however, enough of my frustration!

Ben Hoare’s passion for birds and desire to inspire and enthuse others is absolutely infectious and, although I am not a fan of the term ‘gift book’, this one would make a very special present for any bird lover.

The contents introduces the reader to the wealth of birds captured in its pages. Sections indicated in italics focus on more generic topics like ‘beaks’ or ‘eggs’ which offer comparisons and comments about specific breeds of bird. Everything is beautifully presented: inside, a mixture of photographs and illustrations on each spread, outside, gold page edges and an embossed cover.

Readers learn how many of these birds got their names as well as some of the myths and legends associated with them. There is such a wealth of knowledge here- you might start by looking up a specific bird, but the easy style of the text and the author’s great knowledge and enthusiasm will lead you to others. A real gem, this is an absolute keeper!

Life in the Wild

‘Life in the Wild’ is a fascinating book. In her note, the author describes it as ‘an intersection between science, story telling, adventure and conservation’ and it does indeed reflect all of these areas, making it a very accessible and enjoyable read.

Each chapter is devoted to an exceptional individual of different species, tagged and tracked by scientists to deepen understanding of their behaviour. Ten creatures are introduced followed by a map showing where they live and, in most cases, a tracked journey which they made. General information about the species is included and, for some, further information about conservation work is also given.

There are many books about animals available, but what makes this really stand out from others is the personal connection it offers. By sharing the real plight of 20741, a female adult polar bear, the reader feels a deeper empathy as the story of one illuminates the struggles of the many. The unique behaviours of each creature is sure to intrigue children and develop their interest in the incredible wildlife of our planet.

A wide range of animals is covered here, including some which perhaps get less exposure. Through the story of Sitka, readers learn of the rapid population decline of albatrosses whilst Bigonia’s tale offers a fascinating look at these intelligent, solitary creatures. Advances in technology have allowed scientists to learn more – and yet expose just how much still is unknown.

Each spread is beautifully presented using a mixture of photographs and illustrations, making the book as attractive as it is informative. A glossary and index are included and study references are also offered, allowing those who wish the opportunity to explore further.

Rebel Folklore

Folklore or the stories ‘of the folk’ are central to all societies. Re-told and embellished with every telling, these tales are passed from generation to generation and are usually bursting with larger than life characters. In this fascinating collection, readers are introduced to 50 stories of ‘spirits, witches and other misfits’ and in the introduction, the author acknowledges the importance of reading the tales with ‘their original contexts in mind’, both to fully understand them and also to respect the cultures they emerged from.

The stories are gathered by continent, with the country of origin also indicated. A dramatic illustration accompanies the information about each character and with my copy, I received some lovely cards featuring these. Each section is really well written, offering plenty of information, making links between figures from one culture or time and another and encouraging readers to reflect on the role of these characters who are considered outsiders or misfits in some way.

A completely absorbing, engrossing collection for anyone with an interest in folklore -or for anyone who is intrigued by something a little different, this is perfect for a slightly older audience. It is a book which I will return to again and again!

The Extraordinary World of Birds

David Lindo, also known as The Urban Birder, shares his fascination for birds in this absorbing book about our feathered friends. ‘The Extraordinary World of Birds’ is divided into five sections: What is a bird?; Bird Families; Bird Behaviour; Bird Habitats and Birds and Me. The detailed index is perfect for enabling readers to locate specific information and the glossary explains some of the technical vocabulary used.

The ‘What is a bird?’ section not only explains what birds are, but also offers information about how they fly, the nests they build, their eggs and diet. It also contains a fascinating spread on some record breaking birds, like the peregrine falcon- not only the fastest bird, but the fastest animal in the world.

The next section explains how all of the world’s species of birds can be grouped into different families based on characteristics they share. Packed full of amazing information, there is so much to learn here- and so much to look out for when appreciating the birds around us. The book is illustrated with a mixture of photographs and drawings, making each spread very appealing.

As well as being perfect for children to enjoy at home, there is much here which supports learning in science and geography. Different biomes and habitats are explored as well as adaptations birds have made to survive. The impact of climate change is also considered.

The final section, ‘Birds and Me’, looks at our relationship with these fascinating creatures and what we can do to help them thrive. A spread on birding offers helpful tips to those who might be inspired to give it a go! The book also looks at national birds which countries have adopted, some unofficially.

Sure to inspire an interest in these incredible creatures, ‘The Extraordinary World of Birds’ is a fascinating and informative read.

Starting by answering the question ‘what is a season?’, Vicky Woodgate, with the help of her cat, Mimi, then offers the reader a very practical and informative guide to this fascinating topic.

Offering many links to the curriculum, particularly geography and science, this book would be a valuable addition to class and school libraries. Each spread is well written and explanations are made in clear, concise chunks, often accompanied by illustrations which support the text. Fascinating - and occasionally, quirky- facts are scattered throughout, adding to the appeal. There are also quizzes for the reader to test their growing knowledge with along the way.
